The Great Debate: Tank vs Tankless Water Heaters

When it comes to heating water for your home, there are two main types of water heaters to choose from:  tank water heaters and tankless water heaters.  Each type has its pros and cons, and the right choice depends on your household's needs and preferences.  Regardless of which style heater you choose, remember that it is the fixture's distance away from the water heater that determines how long it takes to get hot water.

Tank Water Heaters:  Tried, True, and Familiar

Tank water heaters store heated water, keeping it hot and ready.  Some of the benefits include:

-Lower upfront cost - typically cheaper to purchase and install.

-Simpler technology - easier & less expensive to repair

-Predictable performance - delivers steady hot water until the tank is depleted.

Some of the negatives include:

-Higher energy use - constantly heats water, even when you're not using it.

-Limited hot water supply - once the tank is empty, you must wait for reheating.

-Shorter lifespan - usually lasts 6-9 years.

Tankless Water Heaters:  Hot Water on Demand

Tankless, or “on-demand”, heat water only when needed.  Some of the benefits include:

-Endless hot water - perfect for back to back showers or large families.

-Lower energy bills - no standby heating means greater efficiency.

-Longer lifespan - often 15-20+ years

Some of the negatives include:

-Higher upfront cost - equipment and installation is significantly more expensive.

-May require upgrades - gas lines, venting, or electrical capacity might need modification.

-Cold water sandwich - hot water is only made when you run the hot side of the fixtures.  You will get a short burst of cold water before getting more hot water.

Which is Right for You?

Choose tank if you want the lowest initial cost, have moderate hot water needs, and don't mind occasional waits for hot water recovery.

Choose tankless if you want lower long-term energy bills, have a high-demand household, and plan to stay in your home long-term.

At the end of the day, the right water heater is the one that fits your home, your usage, and your long-term plans.  Our job is to help you understand the options and choose a solution that makes sense, not push you toward something you don't need.
