Most residential water heaters are tank-type heaters. These tanks are steel with a glass lining installed internally to help protect from corrosion. There is also an anode rod, which is an additional safeguard for corrosion. Typically, tank type heaters have a 6 year warranty for tank leakage. Extended warranties may be available, but the heater is the same construction. The consumer pays for an extended warranty betting against the manufacturer. Typically, we see an average life time of 8 years.
